THE children of today are so lucky; their parents are funky and stylish unlike us. When I sit down with my daughter, and she makes suggestions on how to improve on our home décor, I feel so proud, even though in reality deep down I want to cry when I think of the costs.I had gone to a second hand market the other day when I came across very beautiful cotton linens.  I had no plan to purchase linens, but something urged me to buy these pieces of clothes for I knew I will not get them anywhere else.The linens came in five patterns and in mixed colors. But what attracted me the most is the fact that, all the pieces could be matched together and something wonderful will come out of it. Since I have a plan of redecorating my house, I made a decision to buy the five pieces which measured up to forty meters. I already have a plan in mind on what to do with it. If you go to most homes today, you will be surprised to find out that women have gone yonder in style. Style is no longer limited to our dressing, but has gone all the way to interior décor. It is also interesting to note that, many women today and few men have taken serious matters of interior décor, especially when it comes to creating a welcoming and stylish home that is balanced, visually interesting and comfortable.Sometimes a home can be so boring, but adding patterns may be just what is needed to add impact and excitement to the home. And although getting started may be an intimidating prospect, there are no hard and fast rules, on exactly what pattern should be matched with.When attempting to mix patterns, it is always advised to choose the main fabric--often something out of the ordinary. This does not mean it will be used the most, but it's the inspiration for the fabric choices to come. The others can be either heavily patterned or mixed as long as they have the same colors as the main fabric.Patterns include florals, stripes, polka dots, geometrics, checks, ginghams and toiles. Florals add a soft, feminine touch and have universal appeal. Stripes are versatile. Multi-coloured stripes can help to create cheerful and lively schemes, especially in children’s rooms. Tartans are great for creating atmosphere in a study or a boy’s bedroom. Ginghams are perfect in country kitchens and family rooms, especially when grouped with florals and geometrics. Polka dots add a subtle, and excitement.When mixing similar patterns in similar color schemes, vary the scale of the pattern, starting with the largest on the floor and diminishing in scale as you direct them upwards. If your pattern is large and linear, vary the direction of the lines. If you have a polka dot, relive it with some stripes or checked – remember all primary and secondary colors look fabulous in the company of black and white.Contemporary patterns are becoming more popular, especially in fabrics. In the past, sofas and large furniture pieces were plain or stripped but now they’re taking on all sorts of geometrical shapes and virtually exploding with patterns. You can make your home décor very attractive when you mix colors, patterns and prints.
