Experts from the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) are here to ascertain whether veterinary services in the country meet international standards.
Dr. Theogène Rutagwenda, Director General of Rwanda Animal Resources and Development Agency (Rarda) said government requested to be audited.
The OIE consultants will inspect both the private and government owned veterinary laboratories, for the next two weeks.
They will be looking at how animal diseases are prevented and controlled. They are also to evaluate the general hygiene of the livestock and the people who keep them.
This inspection will also be carried out at border posts to evaluate across borders animal movement, slaughtering houses and dairy depots, Rutagwenda said.
The inspection being the first of its kind by OIE, Rarda officials are hopeful that it will offer remedies where the country does not measure up. This report is also expected to be used for updating and ranking Rwanda’s profile in OIE statistics.
