The Independent Institute of Lay Adventists of Kigali (INILAK) has signed a deal with Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography with an aim of promoting research in environmental studies. In an interview yesterday, the Rector of INILAK, Dr Jean Ngamije, said the Chinese group, a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will help them improve various departments, especially in carrying out research on improving ecosystems. He added that together with Xinjiang, plans are underway to begin offering master degree programmes in environmental studies at INLAK, saying that the Chinese would send lecturers to come and train their counterparts at INILAK and other universities in the country."At the moment our country does not have enough experts in the domain of environmental protection, that is why INILAK has entered into this agreement to begin offering degree courses in environmental management and disaster management,” he said.Apart from coming to teach at INILAK, the agreement has an education exchange component, where students from INILAK will go and study at Chinese institute. Prof. Chen Xi, the Director General of Chinese Academy of Sciences, observed that Rwanda is on the right track concerning the quality of education."We are planning to establish, in the near future, a centre for research in environmental studies, especially in ecology and agriculture,” said Xi.
