Editor,The Minister of Sports and Culture, Protais Mitali, has called on Rwandans to come out in large numbers in support of the national football team, Amavubi Stars, when they take on Benin in Kigali on Sunday. He reasoned that moaning and criticising Amavubi over that hugely embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Algeria last Saturday would only further demoralise the players, and therefore, requested fans to have only kind and motivational comments for the national team. However, the minister forgets that football is about results. He seems to forget that football is a game of emotions, and that it is not funny that your team concedes a whopping 12 goals in just four matches within a space of two weeks! I was checking the results from the various World Cup qualifiers, over the last weekend, across the continent, and realised that Rwanda’s defeat to Algeria was among the heaviest. The truth is that Amavubi have hugely disappointed us, as fans.We will still go to the stadium to cheer them on this Sunday, but the Hon. Minister, the FA administration, coaching staff as well as the players, should all know that there’s nothing fancy about whatever transpired over the past two weeks in the national team!Amavubi Stars should work harder if they are to be guaranteed of uninterrupted public support. They should show more hunger for goals and not be too generous to their opponents with silly goals!Jean Pierre DusengimanaKigali
