PLANS to install a central sewerage system in the City of Kigali this year have been delayed by lack of funds, an official has disclosed. Speaking to The New Times, the Vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Alphonse Nizeyimana, said the construction of the plant was slated to start this year but the official said it may take longer to implement as the government is still lobbying for funding."We can’t tell when this plant’s implementation will specifically commence because we haven’t yet got any funding. We are still lobbying,” Nizeyimana observed. The installation of the plant has been rescheduled to commence next year, according to city officials. The central sewage treatment plant, which would be privately owned, will be based at Giti Kinyoni in Nyarugenge District. The central sewerage plant, whose detailed physical master plan is already complete, is expected to cost US$70 (approx. Rwf42 billion), upon completion. According to the city officials, the sewerage system is an urgent matter as many buildings continue to sprout around the city."We expect to have every commercial building in the city to be connected to this sewerage system upon completion,” Nizeyimana asserted.According to the city official, all buildings will be connected to the envisaged central sewerage system, which will be more cost effective as developers would not be required to put up their own facilities.Currently, every large complex is supposed to have a localised sewage treatment plant.
