EASTERN PROVINCE

Nyagatare—Residents of Rukomo, Rwimpasha and Katabagemu sectors of Nyagatare district have expressed frustrations over the slowness in registration for the new national identity cards.

The registration, initially supposed to end on September 2, yesterday entered its forth day with no enough equipment.

Residents are claiming that the delay is likely to draw bribes while authorities claim that some residents had illegally moved in the district to register.

A source from Rukomo sector said that some officials are asking for bribes from illegal immigrants in the district to register them.

Thomas Ruhanika, the coordinator of the registration said that the process was disrupted by insufficient registration equipment.

He however denied having heard of any irregularities in the registration.

"I have not received any case of malpractices since we began registration, however the cause of the delay is lack of enough equipment,” Ruhanika said.

Registrars have also complained that they have not been facilitated.
