Rwanda will no longer have to carry out DNA tests and other forensic medical services elsewhere upon completion of the expansion works on Kacyiru Police Hospital.The police hospital is currently under expansion, with the whole process expected take over Rwf1billion.Dr Daniel Nyamwasa, the director of the hospital who confirmed the development, said that they will also open up an HIV & TB clinic, more safe houses for protecting GBV victims, an administration block and a modern laboratory."Since we are a referral hospital for GBV cases, the forensic medicine department will support us in producing evidence through collection and analysis of medical proof to help in judicial proceedings,” he said.DNA tests for Rwanda are usually carried out in Germany which is a bit costly. He stated that they haven’t been having enough infrastructures but after expansion, they will expand their specialty in forensic medicine such as carrying out post mortem and other related cases.Nyamwasa said that the hospital will have eight safe houses for protecting GBV victims; imaging will also be carried out from the new laboratory under construction and HIV/TB patients will also seek medical attention from the HIV/TB clinic.Currently, the hospital has 40 beds for hospitalization of only pregnant women, which shall remain the same. According to Nyamwasa, the capacity of the hospital will not change because they are not after hospitalization of patients.He stated that there will be more specialized services that will benefit all Rwandans.The hospital has specialists in post mortem and those who deal with HIV patients.He observed that they have plans of sending more police medics to other countries to do short courses so they will able work as Specialists in the hospital.He noted that the Ministry of Health together with Rwanda National Police will provide more equipment for the hospital after expansion.The hospital has been operating since July 2009 and their primary focus is domestic and gender-based violence cases.
