Kigali City Council in partnership with the national Transport Development Agency (RTDA) is carrying out a survey to establish the cause and remedy for the floods that have paralysed businesses in parts of the capital.
Kigali City Council in partnership with the national Transport Development Agency (RTDA) is carrying out a survey to establish the cause and remedy for the floods that have paralysed businesses in parts of the capital.According to the Mayor, Fidele Ndayisaba, the survey will mainly focus on the Nyabugogo wetland in Nyarugenge District. Ndayisaba said that KCC and RTDA are working on coming up with the required amount of money to solve the flooding issue in the area which may see many commercial complexes razed. According to KCC, the process will also affect the main taxi park, commercial buildings and several hospitality facilities near Nyabugogo wetland that get flooded when River Nyabarongo bursts it banks. "We are currently carrying out evaluations of the most affected area, like the Nyabugogo Taxi Park and Kinamba road near Nyabugogo, to see how much money is needed f” Ndayisaba said.He noted that only those with legal construction permits will be compensated.Five deaths have been reported in the last two months as a result of the floods.Ndayisaba said after the study, the implementation process is expected to commence early next year.The development is also in line with City of Kigali move to relocate over 5,000 households situated in endangered areas. The districts are currently identifying houses that are located in the designated areas like steep hills and wetlands.So far 2, 700 households in Nyarugenge, 2,886 in Gasabo and 250 in Kicukiro Districts have been earmarked for the exercise.
