Umutara Polytechnic scoops ICT award

NYAGATARE – Umutara Polytechnic emerged the overall winner of this year’s inter-school ICT competition.The competition, organised by the national centre for sciences in collaboration with Japanese government, brought together different high institutions of learning that offer science courses.This year’s competition saw selected ICT students from different institutions competing in electronics where they made, among others, electronic robots while others developed different software applications.The competition was moderated by ICT experts from Japan.Presenting the award to the students and faculty members of the university, the rector, Dr James Gashumba hailed ICT students for their outstanding competence demonstrated during the competition. "The award we have received as the best ICT practitioners is a sign that we have matured to a better level in the sector. This victory should return to Umutara Polytechnic every year,” he said.The Director General of Workforce Development Authority (WDA) Jerome Gasana said that the government has put more emphasis on science subjects as part of enhancing capacity building through science and technology."The government strives to put more efforts in sciences as a way of attaining its development agenda…this is how countries like Japan developed,” he said.One of the winning students, Leoncie Mujawamariya attributed the award to skilled lecturers that provide quality ICT knowledge at her school.
