HUYE – National University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) at the weekend donated 17 heifers to vulnerable Genocide survivors in Gishamvu and Karama sectors, Huye District.According to Dr André Musemakweli, the Hospital Director, the donation is part of efforts to support survivors and help them improve their welfare."As we commemorate the Genocide for the 18th time, it is important to remember those whose lives were affected and are now living in poor conditions as a result of our collective history,” Musemakweli said. The beneficiaries promised to take good care of the cows and make the most of them.In a related development, the staff members of the hospital on Friday held a commemoration event to pay tribute to former colleagues killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They also paid respect to patients killed at the hospital. The function kicked off with a walk to remember across Huye town before laying of wreaths at the memorial site of the National University of Rwanda. An estimated 500 victims –including former students and staff members both at the university and the hospital – are buried at the site. The Governor of the Southern Province, Alphonse Munyentwari, requested the mourners to uphold Rwandan traditional values, citing unity, love, respect and patriotism among others."Had we upheld these values, the Genocide would never have happened,” he said."It is our responsibility to make sure that we never witness such moments ever again; we must ensure that what we have achieved after the Genocide is sustained,” he added.
