Editor, I wish to respond to a story that appeared in The New Times of May, 17, titled "Gacaca ‘achieved its mission’.I totally agree with the findings of University of London’s Dr Phil Clark, the author of the new report released earlier this month by the London-based Africa Research Initiative, which unequivocally states that Gacaca was a success for Rwanda and the best way to deal with the judicial challenges of the post-Genocide Rwanda.Gacaca courts have obviously greatly contributed towards peaceful co-existence and reconciliation among Rwandans, and serves as a crucial factor in Rwanda’s resurgence. The success of Gacaca is simply a vindication of the country’s choice to resort to home-grown solutions to address its own challenges. Thumbs up to every Rwandan and all the friends of Rwanda who worked so hard to ensure that Gacaca indeed delivers on its mandate.Seth
