BNR endorses Nigerian as Sonarwa boss

The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) has approved Macdonald James Obi as the Managing Director of Sonarwa, one of the country’s largest insurance companies.

The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) has approved Macdonald James Obi as the Managing Director of Sonarwa, one of the country’s largest insurance companies.Obi has been overseeing the insurer since October 2011 in an acting capacity.Prior to joining Sonarwa, Obi worked as a Vice President for International Energy Insurance Plc based in Nigeria. He boasts over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry.He has extensive experience in several insurance areas including: underwriting, marine, claims administration, reinsurance and risk management.Obi, a Chartered Insurance Practitioner, holds an MBA from Lagos State University. He trained at the Prestigious HSBC Management Training centre St. Albans UK, where he specialised in Energy Insurance and Risk Management.Allen Karungi Gatete, the Sonarwa publicist, said in a statement that she was excited about Obi’s confirmation, noting "his vast experience would add value to Sonarwa.”Christian Kabeza, Alliance Insurance Brokers Ltd’s Business & Relationship Manager said, "It’s with great pleasure to notice the confirmation of Mr, Obi as a Managing Director. It’s an honour for Sonarwa in particular and for the Rwanda insurance industry. We will benefit from his international technical experience.”
