More than 40,000 homes in Rwanda will be connected with electricity by 2010, according to the Managing Director of ELECTROGAZ John Mirenge.

He said this during the signing of a partnership between Electrogaz and STEG International Services which took place on Wednesday at Prime Holdings in Kigali..

STEG is an electricity supplier based in Tunisia.

The signing of the partnership followed a series of interviews between responsible persons and technical staff of both institutions in Kigali and Tunisia.

"This is a breakthrough that will change the lives of so many people in Rwanda," Mirenge said.

The two utilities adopted a single phase electricity distribution system that would benefit all Rwandans.

He added that the cooperation agreement would be a win-win situation for both parties.

The general manager of STEG International Services, Youssef Kalouche, was also optimistic on the success of the partnership which would ensure a transformation in the energy sector in the country by 2010.

"With the experience in rural electrification back in Tunisia, we believe that the bilateral cooperation will yield dividends," Kalouche said.

In January 2008, the Mirenge signed a cooperation agreement with STEG Chief Executive Officer, Othman Arfa, to offer technical assistance to ELECTROGAZ.
