BAL 2023: REG to face Al Ahly in playoffs

Sahara Conference Number 3 seed Rwanda Energy Group (REG) will face Nile Conference Number 2 seed Al Ahly at the playoffs of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) that will unfold in Kigali from May 20-27.

The eight-team BAL playoff matchups were decided after teams four teams booked their tickets from the just-concluded Nile Conference.

The conference, which unfolded in Cairo, Egypt, from April 26 to May 6, was topped by Angolan powerhouse Petro de Luanda followed Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Mozambique’s Ferroviario de Beira finished third while South Africa’s Cape Town Tigers secured the last spot of the playoffs in the fourth place.

The teams that have qualified from the Nile Conference will join their Sahara Conference counterparts including REG, Mali’s Stade Malien, Cote d’Ivoire’s ABC Fighters and Senegal’s AS Douanes.

Beside REG-Al Ahly matchup, Nile Conference champions Petro de Luanda will face Côte d’Ivoire’s ABC Fighters while Sahara Conference champions will take on Cape Town Tigers as AS Douanes awaits test against CF Beira.

Tunisia’s US Monastir are the BAL reigning champions despite failing to make it to the 2023 BAL playoffs after finishing fifth in the Sahara Conference.
