A provisional squad of up to 30 U-18 basketball national team players are set to start training ahead of the Zone Five qualifiers that will to be hosted in Rwanda from July 17-22.According to Richard Mutabazi, the Secretary General of the Rwanda Basketball Federation, players will train three times a day starting this Saturday at Amahoro stadium until mid next month."Most of the players are students, so they will be training from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. There are also players, who played in the 2010 U-18 tourney but are now pursuing their careers in the U.S."Those (players based in the US) will join others a month to the competition,” Mutabazi said. The team will then join residential training camp two weeks before the tournament starts.The week long competition will attract eight teams which include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Burundi. The tourney will also feature a girl’s competition.Rwanda finished in 6th position in the previous edition but with Egypt having qualified, coach Nenad Amanovic will fancy his team’s chances.Meanwhile the basketball league is also expected to start later this month. KBC won the championship last season but they are in for a long fight with APR coach Cliff Owuor vowing to claim this year’s championship.
