As workers across the world celebrate International Labour Day, the Rwanda Socialist Labour Party (PSR) has called on the government to establish a commission for skills development."The commission should have branches at the local levels in order to assist more people access the skills development services,” said head of the Party Jean Baptiste Rucibigango who is also a Member of Parliament.A statement issued by the Party ahead of the celebrations, also requests government to be a guarantor for those who are unable to set up their projects and to have a follow up policy on those that have acquired assistance from the government."Regarding employment within the East African Community, the Executive Committee of PSR has realised that Rwanda has become a regional employment hub and for that matter, there is need to empower Rwandans so that they can compete on the regional labour market,” reads the communiqué.During this year’s Labour Day celebrations, the PSR will recognise the government’s recent move of increasing teachers’ salaries by 10%."This was a great move towards the development of Rwanda. Teachers are the core of a nation’s prosperity. However, there is still a long way for a teacher to manage the market prices, their salaries are still low,” the statement reads. This Year’s Labour Day theme is; "let’s promote work through supporting job creation.”Also known as May Day, the International Labour Day is observed all over the world on May 1 to celebrate the socio- economic achievements of workers. The day has a historic significance which dates back to May 1, 1886.
