Editor,Figures from Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) last week announced that there was a 20 per cent rise in tax collection for the last nine months, compared to the previous year. This, according to RRA was, among other things, due to a strong economic growth and easy payment system. This means that if all of us pay taxes as required by law, our economy would grow much faster. Tax evasion is still rampant and affects each one of us; because some people and institutions don’t meet their tax obligations, the government is unable to construct and equip schools as it should, and roads remain in sorry state.I must however appreciate and voice my support for the efforts by the national police and RRA in fighting against tax evasion. This war should be owned by all Rwandans because tax evasion undermines the country’s economic aspirations. It is through paying our taxes that we can eventually stop relying on donors as a nation.Fred AgabaKimihurura
