Rwanda will soon start to train police commanders from Eastern Africa region, a senior police officer has disclosed.

Cyprian Gatete, the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Training in Rwanda Police, said that eligible senior police officers from the region will be trained beginning next month.

He said Rwanda police has been identified as a credible force to share its skills with other police forces in the region. 

The six-week training will be jointly conducted by the Rwanda National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and the International Academy Bramshill, a UK institution. The annual programme aims to equip polices institutions in the region with dynamic and new strategic leadership skills.

"The course will help promote the adoption of human rights and diversity principles in policing,” Gatete, a former student of the Bramshill Police Academy, explained

The course will put emphasis on leadership, strategic management, police area command partnership working and managing operations.

Eligible officers for the training are police station/district commanders and their deputies, heads of department at the rank of superintendent and those in mid-management who have been identified for promotions. Meanwhile, Gatete also said that Rwanda will train Somali police cadet officers at the end of this year. 

A comprehensive training policy document would be ready by September 15, he said.Ends
