Editor,I read in The Sunday Times April, 22, that police had, once again, instructed all Taxi Moto operators to provide their passengers with the smart head covers to help protect the public from skin related diseases. It’s obvious that smart covers boost personal hygiene. But since the order on the use of smart head covers came into effect on March 1, the majority of motorcyclists have yet to embrace the gadgets.I have personally used smart head covers and appreciate them because they protect taxi moto passengers from contracting skin diseases. But motorcyclists are reluctant to provide us with them, citing cost implications.Considering the health risks associated with putting on a vastly-shared, bare helmet on your head – as confirmed by the Ministry of Health – , police must ensure that the new directive is respected. It must be recalled that motorcyclists carry dozens of passengers a day, giving each of them the same helmet, which is a significant health risk.I would like to thank all the stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, the Rwanda National Police and passengers, for working together to protect Rwandans.Dan MatsikoNyagatare
