The national football league has been put on hold to for now to enable the Amavubi Stars start preparations for their African Championship first round clash against Sudan set for May 4 in Khartoum.

The Amavubi Stars under new Croat coach Blanco Tucak have exactly five days to prepare for the clash with the fourth ranked side in the Cecafa region (107) after Ethiopia (88) and Uganda (91) and Tanzania (94) in the newly introduced championships meant for local based players. Rwanda is ranked 111.

Rwanda lost to Sudan 4-5 on penalties after a 2-all draw in the final of last year’s Cecafa senior challenge cup staged in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Amavubi Stars progressed to the next round after eliminating Burundi 1-0 on goals aggregate early this month.

A win for Amavubi Stars would increase their chances of taking part in the 2009 finals set for February 22- March 8 in Ivory Coast. Only the winners of their respective zone qualify fir the finals.

The national league is expected to return on May 9 when AS Kigali hosts Electrogaz at Nyamirambo stadium and Police plays away to Marines in Gisenyi at Umuganda stadium.

On May 10, league title favorites, Atraco FC and APR are up against Mukura at Huye stadium and relegation threatened Etincelles at Nyamirambo stadium respectively.

Kibuye hosts Military at Gatwaro and Kiyovu hosts Rayon Sport at Nyamirambo stadium in the battle of the titans the following day.

Atraco leads the league table after their deserved 1-0 victory over rivals APR 1-0 last Thursday. The win took Atraco back on the top of the league table with 41 points, two points ahead of APR in second place.

However, both clubs still have a game in hand; Rayon Sports for Atraco and Police for APR. Rayon Sport is third on the league table with 33 points after 15 rounds of matches.
