The merging of the Ministry of Youth and that of ICT, last week, is a clear demonstration of the integral part the youth and technology jointly play in achieving the country’s development goals. Both the youth and ICT occupy a special place in Rwanda’s development agenda. The youth, the single most important demographic group, are the ultimate drivers of Rwanda’s development agenda.Similarly, ICT constitutes one of the key vehicles to the future this country aspires for. The government has invested heavily in ICT infrastructure, in addition to encouraging the youth to use ICT to boost their innovation, creativity and production capacity.By strategically positioning ICT policies and programmes in the heart of the most active and ambitious section of society, the country will leverage the latest technologies to help unlock the country’s potential and accelerate development. The custodians of the new ministry should ensure that ICT policies and programmes respond and resonate well with the needs of the youth. Once the interventions are more focused and targeted, the youth will take ownership, hence better end results. The youth should now seize the opportunity as the shape their futures and that of the country.
