Respecting the elderly

Try to imagine yourself at over 80 years of age. Think about how you would want to be treated. What form of respect might you want in your later years?  This is exactly how you should treat the elderly, whether they are your, parents, grandparents, the old people you meet at church or the stranger you meet on the street.

Try to imagine yourself at over 80 years of age. Think about how you would want to be treated. What form of respect might you want in your later years?  This is exactly how you should treat the elderly, whether they are your, parents, grandparents, the old people you meet at church or the stranger you meet on the street. One of the biggest reasons as to why you should respect them is because it’s the right thing to do. They were once young and strong, they gave the best years of their lives to their children and society. They worked hard to make a living, care, protect and nurture their children. Now that they are in their golden years, it is time that their children and grandchildren plus the society gives back to them a little bit of what they did for you. As a youth, you should be there for them, treat them preciously whether they are your parents, or someone else’ parents, old people should be respected. Most elderly grew up in a time where morals, values and respect were taught and expected.Basic manners should be practiced in all situations, practice common courtesy. Be polite, give up your seat if you see an old person standing, help them cross the road etc. Be a good listener. Sometimes they may say silly things forget something or lose their train of thought, but they have seen and heard so much history. They will enjoy someone listening to their experiences. Do not be critical or poke fun at forgetfulness or old-fashioned opinions and do not expect to change an elderly person’s opinion even if they are wrong in your eyes. They have likely felt that way for a long time and their opinion is worth acknowledgement. Remember the true meaning of youthfulness is always having respect for the elderly.
