Rwanda schools’ team has been hailed for it’s achievement at the just concluded East African Secondary Schools Games at Moi stadium in Kisumu, Kenya over the weekend.

Team Rwanda finished third overall after scooping one gold, and three bronze medals respectively.

Twenty-two schools from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Zanzibar and the hosts Kenya took part.

The Rwanda Sport Schools’ Federation (RSSF) technical director acknowledged that to finish in third place is a good achievement for Rwandan schools given the high number of schools that took part in the Games.

Aaron Rurangirwa said, "Our schools performed better this year as compared to the past editions where coming among the top teams was purely a dream.”

"This shows that in the next editions our schools shall be able to dominant other regional schools if early preparations are initiated,” Rurangirwa added.

St. Joseph secondary school of Muhanga district of the Southern Province won Rwanda’s only gold after winning the boy’s volleyball title.

National school’s handball champions, Apapeki Cyuru won bronze while College Inyemeramihigo won bronze in the boys’ basketball event.

Groupe Scolaire des Parents won the third bronze for taking third spot in the boys’ football category.

In girls’ category, Groupe Scolaire Aspej fell just short of another bronze losing the third place play-off girls’ football 1-0 to Kenya’s Moi girls’ school.

Groupe Scolaire Officiele de Butare, College Inyemeramihigo (girls) and Apapeki Cyuru (boys) failed to go past the preliminary stages.

Hosts Kenya scooped the overall winner’s trophy after winning six gold, three silver and two bronze medals respectively.

Uganda finished second overall after scooping three gold, two silver and three bronze medals respectively.
