Ruhango to construct Rwf500m memorial

Plans are underway to construct a Rwf 500m Genocide memorial centre in Kinazi Sector, Ruhango District.The development was confirmed by the district’s vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, Jolie Germaine Mugeni, while hosting employees of MTN Rwanda who were paying tribute to the 60,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi killed in the area.   "Next month, we shall be screening the bids for the construction which will be carried out in phases basing on our financial capabilities,” she said.During the visit, the telecom giant’s employees toured Rutabo Primary School where Francois Hitimana, one of the survivors in the area, explained how the Tutsi were killed and dumped in a pit."Although some of us managed to escape, many from our group didn’t survive the rampaging militia.”While pointing to a pit near the school, Hitimana narrated how 60000 people were massacred and dumped in the massive pit that was dug prior to the genocide.According to Hitimana, the pit was filled to the brim with bodies within 100 days.Speaking on behalf of the employees, Mary Assimwe, in charge of Human Resource, encouraged survivors to work towards unity and development."We have to remember our loved ones who perished but also look at the best way to create a bright future so that what happened can never happen again,” Assimwe said.MTN donated Rwf 1.5m to the district to support the needy.
