This movie won the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for World Cinema Drama.Written and directed by Alrick Brown, the story is narrated by the movie’s executive producer, Ishmael Ntihabose. ‘Kinyarwanda’ is the Rwandan produced drama about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and intertwines six stories into a single narrative.Most movies about the Genocide portray bloodshed, frightening images and terror and horror but ‘Kinyarwanda ’tends to show how when neighbors killed neighbors and friends betrayed friends, some crossed lines of hatred to protect one another. It also shows how the Mufti of Rwanda, the most respected Muslim leader in the country, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from participating in the killing of the Tutsi.The movie also shows how mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. Kinyarwanda is based on true accounts from survivors who took refuge at the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the Madrassa of Nyanza. The movie also shows how innocent children can be regarding the things surrounding them. The child in the movie calls the perpetrators so that he can show them the ‘cockroaches’ and the Guns. He takes them to his home. On reaching the house the kick the door open and the boy’s mother and father are asked where they are hiding guns and ‘cockroaches’ (Tutsi). The boy insists on showing the perpetrators the cockroaches and guns. He kicks the cupboard and cockroaches fall out and then he switches on the Television and men with guns shooting at a crowd is all that aired. Kinywarwanda movie will be on DVDs by the May 1st, 2012 and the first 100copies will be distributed at no cost.
