Reports that samples of Rwanda’s silk were ranked the best in India should now be attracting the private sector to invest in this virgin sector. Opportunities are many.

Government has played it’s part to find market and discover the economic potential the silk has, a Rwanda Horticulture Development Agency Rhoda official recently said.

Government allocated about Frw154 million for training 30 farmers from the four provinces in the country.

They are being trained in mulberry farming, silkworm rearing and weaving to ensure that they produce quality silk products.

About 600,000 hectares of mulberry trees are targeted to be planted in three years. And at least 60,000 families are targeted to benefit. Each household will plant 0.1 hectares.
