Youth should not only own activities that will be conducted during the genocide commemoration period, but also come up with measures to fight genocide ideology, and to write about genocide. This was said, yesterday, by the Executive Secretary of the National Youth Council (NYC), Alphonse Nkuranga, in a media briefing."Very few people have committed themselves to write about Genocide yet it’s of great importance since there is a time when these people giving testimonies will be no more,” Nkuranga said.He pointed out that documenting testimonies of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, will enable future generations to learn about their country’s history.Nkuranga said the NYC will provide the necessary support especially connecting writers to the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG)."It is also important to consider findings from surveys conducted so that a writer gets information to give his or her readers facts of what happened,” he noted.Philbert Uwiringiyimana, NYC Coordinator, highlighted the activities planned for the 18th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and urged the public to actively take part."This is the time that we honour victims of such a horrific moment and everyone must take part so as to build a stronger foundation for our country,” he said.In line with the theme for this year’s commemoration, Uwiringiyimana emphasised that Rwandans should learn from their history to shape a bright future.
