SPORTS journalists in the country will next week pay tribute to colleagues, sports administrators, referees, athletes and fans that lost lives in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

SPORTS journalists in the country will next week pay tribute to colleagues, sports administrators, referees, athletes and fans that lost lives in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.The move, which is spearheaded by RISPIN (Rwanda Independent Sports Journalists Association), will include activities like visiting the Kiziguro memorial site in Gatsibo District, and a football academy in the area, and conclude with a night vigil at Amahoro stadium where testimonies and video documentaries will be shown. According to Jean Pierre Habimana, an official of RISPIN, they have enlisted the support of former U-17 world cup players and Kiyovu coach Baptiste Kayiranga to give inspiration to the players in the Gatsibo academy."It will be the second year running that we are organising such an event and our aim is to join the community in remembering people that were killed in the Genocide. "We have enlisted the support of different sports personalities and the Honorable Minister of Sports (Protais Mitali) will also grace the occasion,” Habimana said.The week of mourning starts this Saturday till Friday next week and all sports activities have been put on hold for the next two weeks.
