GASABO - The renovation of King Faisal hospital is estimated to cost $ 50 million and the whole project is expected to last 7 years, The New Times has learnt.

This was revealed yesterday by the Executive Chairman of King Faisal hospital, Dr. Innocent Nyaruhirira during a "Press open day” with local journalists which took place at the hospital.

"The funds for the initial rehabilitation of the hospital are available and the first phase of the renovation will last for 18 months” Nyaruhirira said.

He went on to add that the project will require heavy investment but said it would not deter them because they have the backing of the government.

"We are introducing several changes among which are redesigning the hospital to give it a new look, while at the same time we are recruiting more experienced medical specialists from all over the world” Nyaruhirira added.

While touring the hospital, members of the press had the opportunity to visit various departments and assessed different services and activities at the hospital.

Among the facilities at the hospital are modern state-of-the-art medical equipment like the Computer Tomography Scan used for brain examinations for tumours, trauma and other anomalies.

The head of the radiology department Dr. James Senoga told the press members that most of these facilities are only found here and not anywhere else in the country.

"The CTS is a very essential facility and the only one in the country. It has given services to many patients both here and from neighbouring countries” Senoga said. 

After the tour of the hospital, the heads of departments at the hospital interacted and held discussions with members of the press on various issues.

The hospital has been positioned by the government of Rwanda to evolve into a regional centre of excellence and train trainers with the aim of spreading quality healthcare.
King Faisal hospital now has a "Not for profit” status and is a University teaching hospital.
