GICUMBI — Gicumbi district is in preparation for this year’s international Labour Day celebrations schedule for May 1. Gicumbi was chosen to host this year’s national Labour Day celebrations.

Authorities have embarked on a public health campaign and rehabilitation of feeder roads within Byumba town in preparation of the day’s celebrations.

The district official in-charge of Health and public Hygiene Ange Silas Niyibizi told The New Times on Thursday that his team is engaged in ensuring that all commercial buildings in Byumba are re-painted to give a new look.

He said the campaign would extend to restaurants, bars and meat roasting joints. The proprietors have been advised to adhere to hygienic standards by cleaning the kitchens, toilets and urinals.

"Those who fail to meet the minimum hygienic standards shall have their businesses closed down," Niyibizi warned.

In the meantime, the district official in-charge of infrastructure, Albert Kubwimana said the district has contracted CHECO Construction Company to rehabilitate the 4 Km feeder road network within Byumba town. "The second phase shall begin in May this year and shall cover all feeder roads linking Byumba town to other parts, bringing the total feeder road rehabilitation to 8 km", said Kubwimana.
