British envoy visits The New Times

GASABO - The new British Ambassador to Rwanda, Nicholas Cannon, yesterday visited The New Times Publications head offices in Kimihurura, Kigali.

GASABO - The new British Ambassador to Rwanda, Nicholas Cannon, yesterday visited The New Times Publications head offices in Kimihurura, Kigali.

Cannon met with the company Managing Director, Joseph Bideri, who briefed him on various media related issues in the country. The ambassador and his host also toured The New Times’ premises.

"I am relatively new in the country,” the Ambassador explained. His visit, as he explained, was primarily to get acquainted with the operations of media outlets in Rwanda.

"It is an impressive paper,’’ Ambassador Cannon said of the newspaper after his tour. In his meeting with Bideri, the Ambassador was briefed on the history of the media in the country and its role during and after the 1994 Genocide.

They also discussed the current status of the media in Rwanda. Some media outlets, mainly RTLM and Kangura newspaper incited the public to commit Genocide which would result in the death of at least one million Rwandans between April – July, 1994.
