The 21st Century womanIt was Girl’s Night Out with my four BFF’s (best friends forever). On entering a bar, a group of men in the corner turned and look at us with an expression on their faces that said ‘hey this is not the place for you.’We whispered to ourselves, do these people want us to show them our identity cards to prove we have the right to be here. When we order for drinks, we ask the waiter whether women are not allowed to enter this bar. He said that everyone is welcome besides those under the legal drinking age. Being the only group of women in the bar, since the other women there were with their husbands, I was bothered by the men’s expressions and finger pointing; more so, dare I say it, than my friends. Little did I know that these rude men had mindsets that could only be called ‘conservative’. Two of the men stepped out of the group to go and smoke. I immediately received a phone call from another girl-friend who wanted to come and join us. She told me she was outside the bar and I walked outside to pick her up from the parking lot. Returning with her, we meet the two men who had stepped out. They looked at us, and in the rudest possible manner, said, "Sorry, if you’re looking for men we are all already taken”! We felt utterly humiliated. Was that why they wore those ridiculous expressions when we entered the bar? A lot of unanswered questions crossed my mind, but we played it cool and just walked away. Why do some men think that when young women go out to have fun it’s in order to search for men? That’s a huge misjudgment! Women work very hard throughout the week and going out with either workmates or their BFFs is a way of relaxing. It’s therapeutic to go out and chat with friends after a long day at work. Gone are the days when a young woman is misjudged for her actions. Everyone is answerable for their actions. If a young, single woman goes to a bar it does not necessarily mean that the young woman is searching for a suitor. One can find their prince charming anywhere even on a bus. It’s unhealthy to misjudge!
