Education:Amenities designed for female students’ needs Kayonza — Kayonza Modern School located in Nyamirama sector completed the construction of dormitories that will enable it to accommodate over 580 girls. The dormitories were built with the aid of Barbara A. Stiefel Foundation based in the United States of America. The construction that took over one year to complete saw the Foundation spend Rwf 180 million.Girl students at the school told The Sunday Times that they used to find it difficult to live in congested dormitories. The new dormitories are well equipped with spacious toilets befitting girl students. They have toilets, bath rooms, cloth washing space and rooms specially designed to accommodate female students in menstrual period.A recent study showed that very few schools have girls’ friendly environment in the country. "The dormitories came at the right time…we were greatly inconvenienced. There are good toilets attached to each dormitory, which is a new thing at this school. Some girls left the school because of the poor environment”."The dormitories are indeed modern, with bathrooms well designed for female students. We have been performing well in academics, and I hope we will are going to do even better,” said Jane Mutoni, one of the students.Charles Karamaga the headmaster of the school said that girl child education was one of the school’s priorities. He said that the dormitories will make a change, adding that students should guard the new infrastructure jealously."We promote girl child education as matter of principle; boys of course are not left behind. There are some basic needs however, girls need as opposed to boys. The new dormitories offer such opportunity…we thank our partners from the US,” he said.Stiefel A. Barbara the founder of the foundation reaffirmed her commitment to support the school, saying that girl child education was paramount. The School has a population of 924 students, of which 334 are girls.
