Religious insolence vs. heathen entertainment

Blasphemy and demonic performances are not something new in the music industry.  However, they seem to be getting more and more shocking the second a musician comes up with an alter-ego.

Blasphemy and demonic performances are not something new in the music industry.  However, they seem to be getting more and more shocking the second a musician comes up with an alter-ego. With their horrific outfits and ghastly performances, one is left with no choice but to believe that the focus ceases to be on an artist’s music and more on creating controversy. Lately, the majority of musicians only care about expression and not impression. Clearly if they cared one bit about impression then Lady Gaga would never walk out of her house dressed in meat-like garb, and surely Nicki Minaj would have hesitated to perform as Roman Zolanski- her alter ego that left half the world wondering if she had finally sold her soul to the devil. Well, some might say the expression has gone overboard but Nicki Minaj must have felt it was time she joined Lady Gaga in having what appears to be a demonic alter-ego. Now seriously, if this isn’t disrespect of the Roman Catholic Church then it is a complicated case of insanity. Nicki Minaj majestically showed up at the 2012 Grammy Awards dressed as a nun with a man who appeared to be the Pope himself, and this obviously did not go down well with many Catholics. I know people have a way of encouraging others and telling them they can be however they want to be, but one choosing to be the pope sounds like identity theft to me.Anyway, the 2012 Grammy awards are not the first time we see an international musician take pleasure in flirting with blasphemy. Lady Gaga has only been beaten by Nicki Minaj this year but in her 2010 Alejandro video, she appeared clad in a latex nun outfit and was swallowing rosary beads- now this was really freaky but we shall let it pass because it is Lady Gaga anyway.Madonna, commonly known as the Queen of Pop released, released the song ‘Like a prayer’. It’s video had catholic symbols like the cross being burnt while she was having dreams about making love to a saint!  And then people still wonder why Lady Gaga is seen as a reincarnation of Madonna. While others make their expressions visible to the world, we have those who make an impression with their music and get rewarded for it. Adele was seen scooping most of the awards of the night and some people feel that her plan to take a five year break is even more heartbreaking because it leaves them stuck with the likes of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, whom they think are bad influence to the younger generation. However, not all is bad for 29-year-old Nicki Minaj. She is going to become the next face of soda giants, Pepsi, joining the likes of Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lopez and David Beckham among other celebrities.
