Kony film: Why can’t Africa tell its own story?

Editor, The views, reactions and opinions range from denial, rage, fury to tears.  All prompted by the Kony 2012 video. The merits and demerits of this and whatever drove its maker is not my concern here. My concern is: why can’t Uganda or Africa at that, tell its own story?

Editor, The views, reactions and opinions range from denial, rage, fury to tears.  All prompted by the Kony 2012 video. The merits and demerits of this and whatever drove its maker is not my concern here. My concern is: why can’t Uganda or Africa at that, tell its own story?  Why has it always been outsider to do it? Attend any seminar for the ‘dissemination’ of study findings, and most invariably, the first sentence will be acknowledgement to development partners. The Western media have always come under attack for the negative portrayal of Africa. What would it take for Africa to have its own al-Jazeera? In this era of ICT, with our universities headed by and churning out ICT gurus. Why hadn’t we thought of making our own documentary of the post-conflict recovery in northern Uganda, and uploading it on You-tube?  For the government to ask the makers of the video to correct it and portray a better picture may not help. The responsible ministries, departments and agencies should have been pro-active, and acted ahead of critics, who will always be there. All is needed are facts and figures to counter whatever is viewed as being contra. Matsiko DB KahungaPeers Consult Ltd

Editor,On Kony 2012, the question to ask is: where were the filmmaker and those marines in the past 20 years, when kids, women, elderly were being hacked to death by Kony rebels? These people will never stop milking money out of Africa. It seems someone is trying to account for the money of this NGO funds....!People from our continent should have the resolve and willingness to solve our problems and stop waiting for someone coming from the other end of the world...!ruluma@yahoo.com Editor,It was disheartening to hear the narrator of the video say "no one has cared, until now.” That is unfair and insincere. Many brave Ugandan men and women have died or been wounded fighting and hunting Kony’s LRA in Uganda, South Sudan, DRC and Central African Republic, for over 20 years. Among them were some of our friends and relatives in Uganda, and even some of our own Rwandan heroes who lived in exile in Uganda at the time. WillyWashington DC – CM
