Rwanda’s team at the 11th edition of the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan is expected to arrive today after an unconvincing display.
Dieudonne Disi and Angelline Nyiransabimana who competed in the 5000m race yet again failed to win any medals.
Though Nyiransabimana broke Mercianne Mukamurenzi’s national record of 15:58:00 which was set during the 1987 Nairobi All Africa Games, she failed to get past the heat stage after clocking 15:53:23 and has since switched her focus to next year’s Olympic Games due in Beijing, China.
Disi completed Rwanda’s misery after failing to qualify for the men’s 5000m finals.
Disi who finished 11th after clocking 13:47:30 was one spot away from qualifying.
The athletes return home together with the athletics federation president Jean Paul Munyandamutsa and Secretary General Appolinaire Munyangoga who had accompanied the team in Osaka.
Nyiransabimana and Disi will then return to their respective training camps in Kenya and Holland in preparation for next year’s Olympic Games.Ends
