The national football team, Amavubi Stars will, this afternoon, host a star-studded Super Eagles side of Nigeria in the first leg of the preliminary round for the 2013 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers, at the Kigali Regional Stadium.Much has been said on both sides in the run up to today’s game which pits two teams that failed to qualify for the just-concluded African Cup of Nations (AFN).Since the AFN qualifiers Amavubi has enjoyed an impressive run. Of their last 10 games, they have won seven, drawn two and lost just one - on penalties.With the new lease of life and a more experienced coach, Amavubi are in a better position to record yet another vital win.The team is largely composed of young players who have demonstrated the will, desire, commitment and ability to perform at the highest level.Some of the youngsters are former members of the U-17 national team, which qualified for last year’s FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico, after eliminating teams known to be African heavyweights, including Egypt.While Nigeria may be considered the favorites as they are two-time winners of the AFN and have played in the World Cup four times, there is generally strong belief that Amavubi are a force to reckon with.The national team can also count on the rejuvenated support from the home fans who are keen to see their team rise to the top.Good luck Amavubi.
