The 10th edition of the Ascoki Labour day celebrations tournament has been called off.
Ascoki technical director, Jean-Pierre Gakire confirmed the development recently, adding that main sponsors, Ministry of Labour and Development have forced the annual tournament to be called off.
"The decision taken by the Ministry of Labour and Development is disappointing to all stake holders who had used this tournament to elevate the sport standards in the country.”
"We had already made the fixtures for the event, the Ministry never budgeted for the event thus calling off the tournament,” Gakire said.
The annual event always costs Frw. 1.5 millions and has been running for the past nine years since its inauguration in 1998.
According to Gakire, the budgeted money is to award teams with trophies in a tournament that is held to make the international Labour Day.
Eleven Corporate clubs had confirmed their participation in this year’s event where clubs participate in three sports disciplines including football, basketball and volleyball.
The confirmed clubs are reigning football champions BK, Basketball and Volleyball defending champions, MOD (The Ministry of Defense), Mispoc( Ministry of Sports and Culture), ORINFOR, RRA, BCR, RAMA, AGESPRO, Electrogaz, Bralirwa, and KIE (Kigali Institute of Education).
