Police Wednesday arrested the former Mayor of Gakenke district, Epaphrodite Mugemangango, for crimes he allegedly committed prior to his sacking last month.

The Regional Police Commander, Peter Hodari, confirmed the arrest saying that a dossier containing criminal charges against Mugemangango had been forwarded to the prosecution. He is being detained at Muhoza police station and he is due in court today.

Mugemangango was given a vote of no confidence by the District Advisory Council following accusations of his failure to fight the genocide ideology cases reported in the district, neglect of responsibilities and mismanagement of the district’s funds.

According to a report produced by the council, the former Mayor caused the loss of frw40 million to the district after he unlawfully ordered for the demolition a house belonging to one of the area residents.

Cases pinning the Mugemangango included speeches he made in April last year to residents of Nemba and Mataba sectors where he alleged that there was double genocide in the country.

Meanwhile, an extraordinary District Advisory Council meeting which included provincial governor Boniface Rucagu, convened yesterday and appointed Zephrin Ntakirutimana, the president of the council, to act as the interim Mayor of the district.
