The Burundian government on Thursday announced that a German institution is donating 1.5 million Euros (2 million U.S. dollars) to help the African country protect and better manage its underground water resources. The donation from the German Federal Institute for Geo-Sciences and Natural Resources will be directed to the Burundian Geographical Institute (IGEBU), according to a donation agreement.
Burundian Water, Environment, Territory Management and Urbanization Minister Jean Marie Nibirantije said the fund will be used for groundwater protection efforts in three provinces -- Kirundo, Gitega and Bujumbura Rural
"The project comes at the right time because the three provinces have been facing recurring rainfall deficits due to climate change,” the minister said.
