WESTERN PROVINCE

RUSIZI — Rusizi district is to construct 1631 houses for Genocide survivors without shelter this year, the district Mayor said.

Addressing reporters at his office on Monday, Jean Pierre Turatsinze said the first phase of the work kicked off in February and 137 houses have already been erected.

"We hope to construct 1,631 houses for genocide survivors who don’t have where to stay in our district. These homes will all have same standard, for example they will be containing a toilet, kitchen and a bathroom," Turatsinze said.

He explained that 441 sites have been identified to accommodate the houses and that the district and local leaders are leveling ground for 124 construction sites.

Turatsinze appealed to nationals to help the government in aiding genocide survivors and other vulnerable groups. He warned people against genocide ideology in the region.

It was noted that sensitization seminars would act as center for campaigning against genocide and ethnic ideology. The reaffirmed district commitment to help genocide survivors including paying health insurance.
