The Ministry of Education is conducting a final inspection that will determine whether the Rwanda Tourism University College (RTUC) should award degrees or not.Situated in Kicukiro District, RTUC has been operating on a provisional operating license, with no powers to award degrees.The Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education, Prof. Sam Rugege, confirmed to The New Times that the exercise was in its final stages."Yes, RTUC applied for a permanent operating license and our officials have already conducted a site visit. They are now preparing a report that will soon be handed over to the Minister of Education,” Rugege said.RTUC Rector, Callixte Kabera, said that upon accreditation, the institution will pass out the first batch of 346 students.At the same event, the school will also award certificates and diplomas to 90 students in various vocational training courses.Among other requirements, RTUC was required to operate from its own permanent facility. Currently, the varsity is housed in a rented building shared by other tenants.Kabera said they will be relocating to their own site before end of the year."We will immediately shift upon completion of the first phase which comprises of lecture rooms, administration block, computer lab and a laboratory,” he said. RTUC acquired land in Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District where construction of the Main Campus is ongoing. It will also house a cultural centre, hotel and hostels.The entire construction works are expected to cost about Rwf 10 billion.
