Preparations in high gear
The local cycling body Ferwacy has started preparations ahead of this year’s edition of the Rwanda cycling championship dubbed ‘Tour du Rwanda’ set for July 20-27.
Ferwacy president, Aimable Bayingana told Times Sport that as part of preparing a thoroughly and competitive Rwandan cycling tour, two teams are set to represent the country in the one-week long championship which will pass through the whole country.
"Two teams will represent Rwanda in a championship which will also attract several regional and African countries which are yet to confirm their participation,” Bayingana said.
Bayingana added that the teams include Rwanda A & B teams respectively.
"Team A has already been named but team B will be named from the forthcoming national cycling championship.”
Team A is the professional national team which has been taking part in different African championships as well as international championships too.
The team includes: Reigning Rwanda Tour champion Abraham Ruhumuriza, André Niyonshuti, Obed Ruvogera, Uwase Nyandwi, Nathan Byukusenge and Jean de Dieu Rafiki Uwimana.
The team is managed by USA born Coach Jonathan Boyer.
Team B will be selected from the Eastern cycling tour which is due on May 15 and only six good athletes must compose the national team.
The local body is also searching for potential sponsors to enable the committee host a successful championship on home soil.
Meanwhile, a total of 14 Ugandan cyclists have started serious training ahead of the East African lucrative championship.
Uganda Cyclists Association treasurer, Hussein Nsubuga, confirmed the development recently saying that early preparations are aimed at winning Tour du Rwanda.
