GICUMBI —  The Governor of Northern Province, Boniface Rucagu has condemned Rwanda’s former colonialists for fueling ethnic hatred in the country.

Addressing Gicumbi residents during the mourning week that ended Sunday, Rucagu said, in their quest to rule Africa, using the divide and rule policy, the colonial masters led to the 1959 ethnic cleansing and 1994 Genocide.

"Before the arrival of colonialists, Rwandans were united under one culture, respected and assisted each other regardless of their ethnicity,” said Rucagu.

Rucagu castigated former regimes in Rwanda for stoking ethnic tension created by colonialists as a means of holding their grip onto political power. He explained that their acts were out of greed, short sightedness and power hunger.

Rucagu’s address was in reference to the various causes and remedies of Genocide ideology.

"Forced hard labour was brought by colonialists and subjected to all Rwandans, it was not brought by a particular ethnic group”, he added.

He warned parents against indoctrinating children with genocide ideology, but to foster unity, love and peace among all Rwandans.
