The outgoing President of the Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ), Gaspard Safari, is enthusiastic about efforts by journalists to re-energize the association, with the first step being the election of new leaders today morning. The outgoing leadership has served one and a half years beyond its legitimate mandate of two years, something that journalists criticized profusely in a meeting prior to the elections today."I hope that all journalists turn up tomorrow and vote. Those who will have registered by 9:30AM tomorrow as we announced will be the ones legible to vote or to vie for leadership positions.”"This is a good democratic step and we are sure that the elections will be fair. We have an obligation to serve the interests of journalists and I hope that the incoming leadership will serve this cause,” he added.Eight people will be elected; the president of the association, two vice presidents, a general secretary, treasurer and three advisors. The outgoing leadership leaves behind a draft constitution for a proposed journalists’ union that the new leadership is mandated to usher in.
