Whitney Houston died a week ago. It’s almost impossible to believe, yet it’s true. Few people were surprised that it ended like that for her. Still, for such a beautiful talented woman to succumb to her drug and booze abuse is indeed tragic.

Even more tragic is that she won’t be the last. Another celebrity will "overdose” on sleeping pills or anti depressants probably purchased from the same clinic Whitney visited and the story will make headlines, just like Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and many others did not so long ago. I think these "stars” need a serious lecture. I don’t care how much money you make but you cannot just spend it all on drugs and alcohol. Some reports are suggesting that Whitney died broke and I’m still trying to figure out how someone who sold millions of records can blow it all. And the so-called friends and family of this woman, why didn’t they help her? I know she was old enough to make her own decisions but they knew about her addictions and ought to have done something. Now we’ll never hear her beautiful voice again! Whitney’s death isn’t the only grim story that made the news. My heart goes to those 350 prisoners in Honduras who lost their lives. I can’t imagine their terror, knowing that there was no way out, choking on smoke before being burnt alive. I’ve read about horrific fires that gutted schools, churches and hospitals before, and it is always sad when so many people die because there’re no mechanisms in place to handle the emergency. Enough of the sad news. I have to share some gossip from the office. Tuesday was Valentine’s Day and there was a bit of drama. There’s a new girl and you know how it goes. All the guys want to score with her and these past few weeks, they’ve all been trying to win her heart. People buy lunch and airtime but unfortunately for the rest of the bunch, only one of them has a car and he’s the one who gets to take her home most evenings. I hope the others aren’t pushed to steal cars to impress her. Anyway I was waiting to see who she’d go out with on Valentine’s that is if she did decide to go out with any of them. Right from about 9a.m, I could see the guys trying to outdo themselves and I just couldn’t stop laughing. I like this kind of drama. There were no flowers, unless they were delivered to her house, but she went out for lunch and left work quite early. I’m yet to know who the lucky guy or guys were because we haven’t had our girl talk yet. In case you’re wondering why I’m talking about other people’s Valentine experiences and not mine, I’ll be honest and say there’s nothing to tell because nothing much happened. I’m really over the Valentine fever, not for lack of dates but more a sense of maturity. I cannot be caught wearing anything slightly close to read or sniffing roses. I don’t even want to go out on February 14th. What would I be trying to prove? That I’m in love or that some guy loves me so much he wants the whole world to know? There’s a statistic I’m still working on. Few of those people who make it such a big deal celebrate two consecutive Valentine’s with the same person. Just try to prove this yourself. Next year, see if you will celebrate with that girl you sent flowers. To be continued...
