Coming to America casts comedian Eddie Murphy as pampered African prince Akeem, who rebels against an arranged marriage and heads to America to find a new bride. Murphy’s regal father (James Earl Jones) agrees to allow the prince 40 days to roam the U.S, sending the prince’s faithful retainer Semmi (Arsenio Hall) along to make sure nothing untoward happens. To avoid fortune hunters, Akeem and Semmi get jobs at McDowell’s, a local fast-food joint, where Akeem falls in love with Lisa (Shari Headley), the daughter of the owner, Cleo (John Amos). There’s the requisite amount of quasi-tension when it comes to whether Akeem and Lisa will wind up together, but a few small twists aside, it plays out exactly as you think it will.R, 1 hr. 56 minGenre; Comedy, RomanceDirected By: John Landis
