Violent confrontations between the civilian population and officers from the Cote d’Ivoire Republican Forces (FRCI) erupted on Sunday in the eastern area of Arrah casuing many to flee their homes for safety, local residents told Xinhua on Tuesday.According to Konate Alassane, a witness, the violence was attributed to misunderstanding between the native Agni youths and the non-native youths of Malinke, most of whom are in the FRCI. Konate, who spoke to Xinhua on telephone, said the native population was "irritated” by the bad behavior of the youths who joined the FRCI at the height of the post-election crisis since November 2010, and had taken it upon themselves to chase away the soldiers who were causing "congestion” in their locality. On Sunday morning, a group of natives held three soldiers hostage before surrounding a military camp. Soon overpowered by the soldiers, the poorly equipped civilians retreated and started ransacking the homes of the Malinkes, of whom many are in the army.
