First Lady Jeanette Kagame yesterday donated US$10, 000 to Igongo Cultural Centre, the first private museum in Uganda, to facilitate the promotion of culture.The donation was handed over to the centre’s Executive Director, James Tumusiime, by Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Frank Mugambage.He noted that the First Lady has always been at the forefront in championing societal values that dignify a human being.The envoy pointed out that the First Lady is renowned for her philanthropic work, citing her girl child education efforts and enhancement of family values that emphasise that good upbringing of children should be a collective effort."She reflected on her visit to Igongo cultural centre and she took the commitment of saying she would make a humble contribution to this great effort that must be seen to not only continue, but inspire others to make our culture known so that people borrow the good elements in it,” he said.The High Commissioner said that the people of Rwanda and Uganda share historic ties, adding that borders between the two countries are a recent invention.Tumusime, who is also the centre’s proprietor and a renowned Ugandan publisher, thanked the First Lady for the donation, and said that he would soon dispatch a team to Rwanda to learn from the country’s advanced crafts industry."Rwanda has perfected the art of handcrafts and we are looking at more of these cultural exchanges between our two countries geared towards promoting political integration,” he noted.The First Lady and her host, Janet Museveni, visited the centre last year where they urged Africans to ensure that they embrace and preserve their cultural values.
