The local football governing body, Ferwafa wants this year’s Cecafa/Kagame Club Championship set for July 12-26 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to be postponed.

The Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa told Times Sport yesterday that shifting of the Cecafa/Kagame Cup dates will enable participants Rayon Sport and APR complete their national league fixtures.

The national football league will be left with two fixtures when the Cecafa /Kagame Cup start on July 12.

On July 12, Rayon sport is expected to face APR and the following week on July 17, both clubs have different fixtures which also conclude the season.

Kalisa said, "If Cecafa can take up our concern and postpone the regional tournament this will be of great importance for the success of our league,"

When contacted yesterday, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said that all Cecafa members were given circulars on this year’s Kagame Cup but none has sent a proposal.

"This meant that the Kagame Cup dates had no implications on their schedules thus the regional body passing the dates. We shall then not postpone the Kagame Cup,"

"If they feel they (Rwanda) can’t play their fixtures on time before the Kagame Cup, they should let us know if they are withdrawing out of the championship," Musonye said. Meanwhile, thirteen clubs have already confirmed their participation in this year’s Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa)/Kagame Club Championship.

Rwanda will be represented by defending champions APR and Rayon Sport while last year’s losing finalists, Uganda Revenue Authority is also on the list of participants.

As the host nation, Tanzania will enjoy an advantage of fielding two teams and will be represented by Yanga and Simba football clubs.

Other clubs which have confirmed include Vital’O of Burundi, Al Hilal of Sudan, Miembeni FC of Zanzibar, Ten-Ten FC from Eritrea, Awassa City of Ethiopia, Banaadir Telecom of Somalia and AS Compagnie of Djibouti respectively.

According to Musonye, Dar es Salaam’s main stadium, currently under construction, is the most likely venue for the two-week long championship. "Construction work at the stadium is almost complete. We are very positive everything will be ready before July," said Musonye.

Confirmed clubs to this year’s Kagame Cup tournament include; Kenya’s Tusker FC, which has been barred from continental championships due to a debt the Kenya Football Federation (KFF), owed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and now has a chance to showcase their supremacy in the regional competition.
